Subject: NTP conducted 2-year toxicology and carcinogenesis studies of triclosan in rodents to understand long-term toxicity and potential to cause cancer. Triclosan [5-chloro-2-(2, 4-dichlorophenoxy)phenol] is a synthetic, lipid-soluble, broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that has been widely used in personal care products, household items, fabrics, and plastics to inhibit microbial growth, in hospitals as a pre-operative cleanser and sanitizer to control bacterial (e.g., MRSA) spread, and in medical devices.
